Network Interface Card (NIC) Verification

This procedure is for Windows 2000 and Windows XP ONLY!


  • Open Control Panel (Click Start then Settings and select Control Panel).
    (For Windows XP click Start and select Control Panel)
  • Locate and double-click the System icon as shown below in Figure 1A
  • In the System Properties box, locate and click the Hardware tab. Next, locate and click the Device Manager button as shown below in Figure 1B.

  • Locate the Network adapters device and click the [+] mark to the left as shown in Figure 2.
  • Examine the new items that appeare directly below the Network adapters heading AFTER the [+] was clicked and changed to [-].
  • Search for an item that contains one of the following (Ethernet, 10/100 or NIC). If an item was listed with one of these, this will most likely be the network interface card. If not, one is either not present or hasn't been installed properly.
NOTE: If there is a heading labled Other devices, check to see if there is an item for PCI Ehternet Controller listed below it. If so, this indicates that there is a network interface card present but has not been installed properly
