DSL Setup for Microsoft Windows XP

To begin, Click Start/Control Panel to open the Control Panel. If your Control Panel is displayed in Classic View as in Figure 1, locate and double click the Network Connections icon and proceed to Step 1. If your Control Panel is displayed in Category View as in Figure 2, locate and click Network and Internet Connections then click Network Connections as in Figure 3.

Step 1

Locate and click the item Create a new connection under Network Tasks.

When the Welcome to the New Connection Wizard box opens, click the Next Button.





Step 3

The New Connection Type box will open. Select the first option, Connect to the Internet, and press the Next button.

At the Getting Ready box, select the second option, Set up my connections manually, and press the Next button.





Step 5

When the Internet Connection box opens, select the second option, Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password, and press the Next button.





Step 6

The Connection Name box will open. Locate the ISP Name text box and enter a name that will identify this DSL connection from any other type of connection (Example: Net@HomeXpress DSL).





Step 7

At the Internet Account Information box, locate the User Name text box and enter your username. (Example: johndoe). Locate the Password and the Confirm password text boxes and enter the password that you use to connect in both of these boxes.

You will find three check boxes below your account information. The first two should remain checked. The last check box labeled Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection is an option. Using a firewall can help block other Internet users from gaining information from your computer system while on the Internet. If you are using or plan to use your own firewall program, such as Zone Alarm or McAfee's Personal Firewall, you will need to un-check this check box.





Step 8

The Completing the New Connection Wizard box will open. Click to place a check in the Add a shortcut to this connection on my desktop check box. Locate and click the Finish button. Congratulations! You have successfully completed the DSL Setup for Microsoft Windows XP. Steps 9 and 10 will show how to establish a DSL connection.

To open the connection box, Click Start then Connect to then locate and click the connection name you created in Step 6





Step 10

The connection box should open. Verify that your user name is shown correctly (Remember: Your user name should be entered as your complete Email address as directed in Step 7). Correct the user name and/or password if needed, then click the Connect button to connect.





Procedure Complete

If everything was entered correctly and the DSL equipment is on and installed correctly, you should be connected to the Internet.
